Angelfish Annularis (Pomacanthus Annularis)

Annularis Angelfish (Pomacanthus annularis)

The Annularis Angelfish, also known as the Blue Ring Angelfish, is a majestic and iconic species that serves as a premier centerpiece for large marine aquariums. It is famous for its sophisticated pattern of curved, electric blue diagonal stripes over a warm golden-brown body. Its name is derived from the distinctive blue "ring" located just behind the eye on its operculum, making it one of the most recognizable members of the Pomacanthus genus.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Annularis Angelfish, Blue Ring Angelfish

  • Scientific Name: Pomacanthus annularis

  • Origin: Indo-West Pacific (East Africa to Indonesia and the Philippines)

  • Max Size: 30–45 cm (A very large species)

  • Lifespan: 15–20+ years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial with other large angelfish

  • Diet: Omnivore – marine algae, sponges, mysis shrimp, and high-quality frozen preparations for large angels

  • Care Level: Moderate (Due to size and space requirements)

Water Parameters

Temperature: 22–27°C pH: 8.1–8.4 Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025 Minimum Tank Size: 830L+ (220 Gallons+) for an adult

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

The Annularis Angelfish is a bold and active swimmer that requires significant horizontal space. While juveniles are more reclusive and display a different "black with white/blue stripes" pattern, adults become confident "patrol" fish. They can be aggressive toward other large angelfish and fish with similar color patterns. They are not reef safe, as they will readily consume sponges, tunicates, and most species of stony and soft corals as they mature. Ideal tank mates include large Tangs, Groupers, and Triggerfish.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • A massive aquarium with ample open swimming area is critical for their health and growth.

  • Strong rockwork with large caves and overhangs to provide security and sleeping areas.

  • High-capacity filtration and powerful protein skimming to handle the significant bioload of a large omnivore.

  • An established system with some natural sponge growth can help juveniles acclimate to captive feeding.

  • Stable water chemistry, as they can be sensitive to high levels of nitrate.

Why Choose the Annularis Angelfish?

The Annularis Angelfish is for the dedicated hobbyist with a "monster" marine setup. Its transformation from a striped juvenile to a radiant, blue-ringed adult is one of the most rewarding experiences in the hobby. It is an intelligent and interactive fish that often learns to recognize its owner, providing a lifetime of beauty and personality. For a large fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) display, few species command attention like a fully grown Blue Ring Angel.
