Angelfish Scribbled (Chaetodontoplus Duboulayi)

Scribbled Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus duboulayi)

The Scribbled Angelfish is a striking and highly intelligent member of the Chaetodontoplus genus, known for its unique "scribbled" pattern of fine, blue-on-dark-blue lines. This species is sexually dimorphic, with males often displaying a more pronounced yellow tail and a broader yellow band behind the head. Unlike the more aggressive Pomacanthus species, the Scribbled Angel is often described as having a "dog-like" personality, frequently recognizing its owner and following movement outside the glass.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Scribbled Angelfish are very active and require plenty of "swimming lanes" to maintain their muscle tone and reduce stress. While they can be shy when first introduced, they quickly become the dominant personality in the tank. They are not reef-safe, as they are notorious for nipping at LPS corals, soft corals, and especially clam mantles. However, they are often successfully kept in FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) systems with large, hardy tank mates like Tangs, larger Wrasses, and Butterflyfish.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Swimming Space: Large, long aquariums are preferred to accommodate their constant cruising behavior.

  • Rockwork: Provide large, stable rock formations with caves big enough for the fish to turn around in comfortably.

  • Filtration: High-capacity protein skimming is essential to manage the waste produced by this large, active eater.

  • Acclimation: They are prone to skin parasites if stressed, so a quiet, dark acclimation period in a quarantine tank is highly recommended.

Why Choose the Scribbled Angelfish?

The Scribbled Angelfish is a favorite for those who value personality as much as color. Its intricate, maze-like patterns are a marvel of natural design, and its interaction with its keeper is more pronounced than in many other angelfish species. It is a robust and hardy fish once it has settled into a routine, making it a spectacular and long-lived addition to a high-end marine display.
