Live Phytoplankton - Tetraselmis

Tetraselmis Phytoplankton

Tetraselmis is a genus of green marine microalgae widely used in aquaculture and reef systems. Recognizable by its relatively large cell size and natural motility (it swims using flagella), Tetraselmis plays an important role in live feed enrichment and plankton diversity.

Why Tetraselmis Is Valuable

1. Strong Nutritional Profile
Tetraselmis provides:

  • Moderate levels of EPA (omega-3 fatty acid)

  • Quality protein content

  • Natural pigments and antioxidants

While not as DHA-rich as golden algae species, it contributes meaningful nutritional diversity when used in combination with other phytoplankton.

2. Motile Cells (It Swims)
Unlike many non-motile microalgae, Tetraselmis actively moves through the water column. This can:

  • Increase feeding response in filter feeders

  • Extend suspension time in the aquarium

  • Mimic natural plankton movement

3. Excellent for Live Feed Cultures

Commonly used to feed and enrich:

  • Copepods

  • Rotifers

  • Brine shrimp

  • Bivalve larvae

Its softer cell wall compared to some green algae makes it relatively digestible for zooplankton.

Role in Reef Aquariums

  • Supports copepod reproduction

  • Feeds clams and other filter feeders

  • Adds biodiversity to phytoplankton blends

  • Contributes to a more natural planktonic ecosystem

Because of its larger cell size, it may be better suited for larger zooplankton and filter feeders rather than very small coral polyps.

Dosing & Storage

  • Keep refrigerated and shake well before use.

  • Dose gradually to avoid excess nutrients.

  • Consider briefly pausing mechanical filtration when adding live phytoplankton.

Tetraselmis is often included in multi-strain phytoplankton blends to broaden fatty acid profiles and improve live feed performance. When combined with DHA-rich species and diatoms, it helps create a more complete and balanced reef nutrition strategy.
