Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus Japonicus)

Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)

The Powder Brown Tang, often called the White-faced Surgeonfish, is a sophisticated alternative to its more aggressive cousin, the Powder Blue Tang. It is prized for its velvety texture and "painted" appearance. While it is generally considered slightly hardier than the Powder Blue, it still requires an experienced hand to manage its sensitivity to water quality and potential for disease.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Powder Brown Tang, White-faced Surgeonfish, Japan Surgeonfish

  • Scientific Name: Acanthurus japonicus

  • Origin: Western Pacific (Japan to Indonesia and the Philippines)

  • Max Size: 20 cm (approx. 8 inches)

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial toward other Tangs

  • Diet: Herbivore – Algae grazing specialist

  • Care Level: Moderate

Appearance & Identification

The Powder Brown is defined by its muted, "matte" finish and sharp color blocks:

  • The Body: A smooth, brownish-grey to charcoal body that feels like velvet under the right lighting.

  • The "White Face": A distinct white patch that runs from the eye down to the mouth. This is the easiest way to tell it apart from the very similar Goldrim Tang (A. nigricans), which has a much smaller white patch below the eye.

  • The Fins: Stunning yellow highlights on the dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins. The rear of the body near the tail often features a vibrant red-to-orange band.

  • The Scalpel: Like all Tangs, it has a razor-sharp spine at the base of the tail for defense.

Behaviour: The "Busy Grazer"

  • Constant Motion: This fish is an "energy bar" for your tank. It never stops moving, picking at film algae on the glass and rocks.

  • Disease Susceptibility: Like most Acanthurus, they are "ich magnets." They lack the thick mucus coat of other fish, making them prone to Marine Ich and Velvet. A proper quarantine (QT) protocol is highly recommended.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are actually beneficial for reefs as they keep nuisance algae in check.

  • Aggression: They can be "bullies" to other fish with a similar body shape or other Tangs added after them. It is usually best to add this fish last in a community setup.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 340L (90 Gallons). A 4-foot or 5-foot tank is necessary to provide the "runway" space they need for their high-speed swimming.

  • Flow & Oxygen: They thrive in high-flow environments. Use powerful wavemakers to ensure the water is highly oxygenated.

  • Diet: While they eat frozen foods, their health depends on greens. Offer dried Nori (seaweed) daily. Soaking food in Vitamin C or Selcon helps boost their immune system against parasites.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock for natural grazing, but keep the center of the tank open for swimming.

Why Choose the Powder Brown Tang?

The Powder Brown is for the hobbyist who wants the "High-End Wrasse" aesthetic in a Tang. It offers a beautiful, earthy color palette that contrasts perfectly with the neon colors of corals and other reef fish. It is a hardworking maintenance fish that adds a sense of constant activity to the reef.
