Sergeant Major Damselfish (Abudefduf vaigiensis)

Sergeant Major Damselfish (Abudefduf vaigiensis)

The Indo-Pacific Sergeant Major is one of the hardiest and most recognizable fish in the world. In Indonesia, you’ll see them everywhere—from shallow rocky shores to deep reef slopes. They are famous for their bold, "no-nonsense" attitude and their distinct "uniform" of black stripes. While they are incredibly easy to keep, they are notorious for being the "bullies" of the reef as they mature.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Sergeant Major, Indo-Pacific Sergeant, Five-band Damselfish

  • Scientific Name: Abudefduf vaigiensis

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific (Red Sea to the Line Islands, abundant in Indonesia)

  • Max Size: 18–20 cm (approx. 7–8 inches) — Large for a Damselfish!

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Aggressive (especially as they grow)

  • Diet: Omnivore – Will eat almost anything

  • Care Level: Very Easy (Bulletproof)

Appearance & Identification

The Sergeant Major has a classic, rugged look:

  • The Stripes: A silvery-white to bluish-grey body marked with five vertical black bars.

  • The Yellow Glow: The upper half of the body often features a vibrant yellow-to-gold wash, particularly between the black bars on the back.

  • The "Blue" Phase: During spawning, males can undergo a dramatic color change, turning almost entirely bluish-black to guard their eggs.

  • Shape: Deep-bodied and powerful, built for swimming in heavy surf and strong currents.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • The Brave Defender: These fish fear nothing. They will not hesitate to chase fish three times their size away from their chosen territory.

  • Aggression Warning: As juveniles, they are relatively peaceful and can be kept in groups. However, as they grow, they become very territorial. They are best suited for large, aggressive community tanks.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe in terms of corals. They will not nip at polyps, but they are "messy" and active, which can annoy delicate corals.

  • Social Structure: In the wild, they school in the thousands. In an aquarium, they can be kept in groups only if the tank is very large (500L+). In smaller tanks, they will fight each other until only one remains.

  • Tank Mates: Best kept with similarly "tough" fish like large Tangs, Triggers, Groupers, and large Wrasses. Avoid keeping them with peaceful fish like Firefish, Cardinalfish, or small Gobies.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 200L (55 Gallons) for a single adult. If you want a small group, you need 475L+ (125+ Gallons).

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of caves and crevices, but also ensure there is lots of open swimming space. They are very active and love to swim in the mid-to-upper water column.

  • Water Flow: They love high flow. They are built for the "surge zone" and will enjoy swimming directly into the output of a powerhead.

  • Hardiness: These are among the most resilient fish in the hobby. They can survive in conditions that would be fatal to more sensitive species, making them ideal for "rough" setups.

Dietary Needs

They are the "garbage disposals" of the reef:

  • Diet: They eagerly accept pellets, flakes, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood.

  • Vegetables: They also consume algae in the wild, so offering spirulina-enriched foods or Nori is beneficial.

  • Feeding Frequency: Feed 1–2 times daily. Be warned: they are very fast and will often steal food from slower tank mates.

Why Choose the Sergeant Major?

The Sergeant Major is for the hobbyist who wants a highly active, visible, and indestructible fish. If you have a large, aggressive tank with "boisterous" inhabitants like Triggers or large Puffers, the Sergeant Major is one of the few fish that can hold its own and add constant movement to the upper layers of the tank.
