Silver Dollar Striped (Metynnis Fasciatus)

Striped Silver Dollar (Metynnis fasciatus)

The Striped Silver Dollar is a peaceful, schooling herbivore native to the Amazon River basin, specifically the Rio Madeira and Rio Tapajós. It has the classic, thin, coin-shaped body of the Metynnis genus but is distinguished by several vertical dark bars (fasciations) that run down its sides. These bars are most prominent in juveniles and sub-adults, providing excellent camouflage in the sun-dappled waters of flooded forests.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Striped Silver Dollar, Tiger Silver Dollar

  • Scientific Name: Metynnis fasciatus

  • Origin: South America (Amazon Basin, Brazil)

  • Max Size: 14–15 cm

  • Lifespan: 10+ years

  • Temperament: Peaceful but very active

  • Diet: Primarily Herbivore – They have a high metabolism for greens. Feed them spirulina pellets, blanched zucchini, peas, and high-quality vegetable flakes.

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate

Water Parameters

Parameter Value
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.2
Hardness: 4–15 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 285L+ (75 Gallons) for a group

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Like all Silver Dollars, the Striped variety is a social schooler and must be kept in groups of 5 or more. They are incredibly fast and can be quite skittish if kept in small numbers or in a tank with too much foot traffic.

They are ideal for "Community Giants" setups. They pair perfectly with Neon Blue Acaras, Severums, Geophagus, and large Loricariid catfish (Plecos).

Web Developer’s Note: If you're documenting this for a client's site, emphasize that they are "Plant Destroyers." They will eat almost anything green except the toughest plastic or silk plants.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Break the Sightlines: Use large pieces of driftwood and river rocks to create a natural environment. This helps the fish feel secure and reduces their "flighty" behavior.

  • Open Mid-Water: They need a large "runway" for swimming. Avoid cluttering the center of the tank.

  • Lighting: They prefer moderate to low lighting. In very bright "High Tech" tanks, they may hide or appear washed out.

  • Secure Lid: Crucial. These fish are built for speed and can jump significantly high if startled by a sudden shadow or light.

  • Strong Filtration: Large schooling fish create significant waste. Ensure your filtration can handle a high bioload to keep the water crystal clear and low in nitrates.
